TrueCrypt
I searched long and hard for a good, open-source data encryption program that will allow me to keep my info secure, as well as allow me quick access. I found what I was looking for in TrueCrypt.
Truecrypt is an incredible piece of software that allows you to encrypt and protect single files and folders all the way to an entire drive or volume. There is also the ability to create a 'shadow volume', which is an encrypted, hidden volume located in a drives free space.
To store my most sensitive data, I purchased a 16GB flash drive, and installed the portable version of VirtualBox. VirtualBox is a product of SUN Microsystems, and functions as a virtual computer. I have it installed on my flash drive, set up with a Windows 7 Guest operating system. I then used TrueCrypt to encrypt the folder that contains my virtual Windows 7 computer system.
What this allows me to do is essentially carry around a completely secure ''mini computer'' in my pocket. It contains all my essential security information, and passwords recovery data. While it isn''t physically theft-proof, I carry it around with the assurance that if it does get stolen, whoever does won''t be able to access my data.
